Morning Devotion Thoughts

For our first week back to school in January, Uncle Jamin Moore gave his devotions on the Sycomore (KJV spelling) tree. There is only one occurrence of this tree in the New Testament, found in Luke 19. This tree is incredibly unique: it provides multiple harvests of small fruit throughout the year, making it a source of food for those who were less fortunate or poor. For the fruit to be edible, during the ripening process, each fruit has to be poked (the proper term is to "nip"). This allows for the fruit to bruise and speed the ripening process, making the fruit edible within the next few days. The spiritual significance shows even more of God's wisdom and intelligence. Luke 19 is a story about a tax collector named Zacchaeus. Scripture describes him as a chief among the publicans, a wealthy man, and short of stature. This rich, little man, disliked by most because of his occupation, climbs into a poor man's tree (the Sycomore), to see Christ. There are a couple lessons to be drawn from this. The crowd's view of this scene is to believe that this man has no chance of forgiveness; he is a tax collector and makes their lives harder, he won't change and there is no repentance in him. Christ's view, however, is much different. He looks up at this man in the tree and sees fruit. Fruit that just needs a little help ripening. In Hebrews 4:12 we are told that we need to allow God's word to pierce us if we want to produce fruit. "To the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart." The crowd of people disapproved of Christ being a guest of a sinner, but as we are told in Luke 19:10, "the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost". The people murmuring did not believe they needed help from Christ, but Zacchaeus knew he was lost, so he humbled himself and made a public confession before the Lord. CHC, we must learn to be humble. Each of us fall short and sin every day. If we want to be saved then we need to learn to ask God for help to turn from our ways and help us ripen so that "ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God" (Colossians 1:10).
