Morning Devotion Thoughts

One week this month, we had Uncle Ian Macfarlane come in for devotion and talk to us about milk and honey. There are many lessons that we can learn from milk and honey as it is used in the Bible. Milk and honey were used as gifts in Bible times. In Genesis 18:8, Abraham gave the angels milk to drink along with a calf and butter. Abraham wanted to give these men the best that he had. We can see Jacob telling his sons to bring Joseph honey as a gift in Genesis 43:11. In Exodus 3:8, the Promised Land is described as a land flowing with milk and honey. This implies that it would be a good and plentiful land. We can see here that milk and honey are used as a symbol of ease, comfort, and good times. However, we learn in Deuteronomy 31:20 and Proverbs 25:16, that too much of a good thing can cause us more harm than good. We need to make sure that we do not forget about God or turn away from Him during good times. We need to use God's blessings to make the right choices. In Psalm 19:8-10 and 119:103 we can see that honey can also represent the word of God. It says that the word of God is sweeter than honey. We need to make sure that we love God's word and never get sick of it. In 1 Peter 2:2, milk is a symbol of the word of God. We need to make sure that we are constantly taking in the word of God as we wait for the day when the Promised Land will once again be flowing with milk and honey and there will be peace (Joel 3:18-21).
