Cross Country Finale

Message from the Morning Devotions

One of the weeks this month, Uncle Wayne did our devotion on king Rehoboam. He brought out lots of lessons that we should apply to our own lives.

King Rehoboam’s father, Solomon, made Israel’s life difficult! Eventually they pleaded with him saying “Thy father made our yoke grievous: now therefore make thou the grievous service of thy father, and his heavy yoke which he put upon us, lighter, and we will serve thee.” (1 Kings 12:4)

Rehoboam did not know how to answer his people, so he decided to ask for advice. First, he went to the old and more experienced men who stood before his father. They told him to lighten the yolk and if he would serve them, they would serve him. However, Rehoboam did not like the response and decided to talk to his young friends who stood before him. They told him to make the yolk heavier and more grievous so that the people would serve him out of fear. Rehoboam liked the younger men’s idea better, and although it was wrong and selfish, he carried it out. Proverbs 12:15 says “The way of a fool is right in his own eyes: but he that hearkeneth unto counsel is wise.” We see that Rehoboam did not listen to the wise council; he did what he wanted to be right instead of what was right. We can always learn from the older, more experienced people in our ecclesia because they have gone through some of the same things we are going through and can help us to not make the same mistakes as they did.

As a result of Rehoboam’s foolishness, half of the land left his rule and set up their own king to rule over them. If we forsake wise council and do our own thing, our lives will me made a lot more difficult.
